Mapping elections in Germany

Hexagon maps are one of the most popular visualization techniques used to depict election results.

Within this project I mapped electoral results of NSDAP between 1928—1933 together with the results of AfD in federal (2017) and state (2016-2017) elections. I converted the representation of single municipalities from points into neighbouring hexagons. The intensity of the color indicates higher results obtained by the party.

Created maps were used in the research paper on historical determinants of rightwing voting and populism in modern-day Germany and featured in the printed and online version of The Economist.
